Why any old mat won't do
Any big retailer will sell you universal, one-size-fits-all mats. They're cheap, but they have a basic problem: every car's floor is different. The shape of the centre tunnel, the pedal position, the footrest and the seat rails all change from model to model, and even between generations of the same model. A mat that doesn't fit leaves areas exposed, bunches up and creeps around under your feet.
Choosing well is easier than it sounds if you follow these steps.
1. Pin down your exact model and generation
Knowing you drive a 'Golf' or a 'Qashqai' isn't enough. Manufacturers refresh their models every few years and the floor can change with each generation. That's why mats are listed by year range: a model built between 2016 and 2020 may need a different template from the same model built from 2021 onwards.
To check which version you have, look at the registration document or the car's paperwork for the first registration date. Be careful with cars registered right around a generation change: if in doubt, compare details like the headlights or dashboard with photos of each version.
2. Factor in body style and gearbox
A few details of the car affect the shape of the mats:
- Body style: an estate, a hatchback or a seven-seat SUV version of the same model can have different rear floors and boots.
- Manual or automatic: automatics have no clutch pedal, and on some cars the driver's footwell changes.
- Hybrids and EVs: the battery can change the rear floor or boot compared with the petrol or diesel version.
- Left- or right-hand drive: if your car is a UK or Irish import, let us know.
3. Check the fixings
Most modern cars have anchor points in the driver's footwell (and sometimes the passenger's): twist clips, hooks or pegs that hold the original mat in place. They're there for safety, to stop the mat sliding towards the pedals.
A good custom-fit mat should use those same fixings. Before removing your originals, look at how they're attached, so you know what to expect from the new ones and how to fit them.
4. Decide which set you need
Not everyone needs the same thing. Depending on how you use the car:
- Front (2 pieces): if you mostly drive alone or with one passenger. Covers the area that gets dirtiest, especially the driver's side.
- Front and rear (4 pieces): the most popular choice. Ideal if you carry passengers or kids or do family trips.
- Three rows (6 pieces): for MPVs and seven-seat SUVs that use the third row regularly.
- Boot (1 piece): protects the boot floor from shopping, luggage, buggies, dogs or sports kit. Order it on its own or alongside an interior set.
5. Pick the material and colours
If the car is a daily driver that sees rain, mud, beach trips or kids, a waterproof material like honeycomb EVA will save you a lot of cleaning. Then comes the fun part: the mat colour, the border (edge trim) colour and the heel pad — the piece that reinforces the driver's heel area.
A few ideas: black or dark grey hide dirt best; beige brightens a light interior; and a contrasting border (red, blue, yellow) adds a sporty touch without changing the cabin. If your upholstery has coloured stitching, matching the border to it usually looks great.
6. Check the fit when they arrive
When they arrive, take the original mats out and lay the new ones on their own, never on top of others. Clip them onto the fixings, push each one into position and check the pedals travel all the way without touching anything. If something doesn't sit as it should, contact the shop before using them — with a made-to-measure product it can usually be sorted.
